We design the
second visit
Anyone can design a space. We design the return visit. The second visit is the only review that counts.
We started Studio Swank in Austin with a habit we couldn’t shake: we noticed when rooms were trying too hard. The bar with chairs no one wanted to sit in. The restaurant lit so dramatically you couldn’t read the menu. The lobby built for a press release and ignored by the guests it was for. Beautiful, sometimes. But you could feel the seams.
So we made one rule, and we have kept it: design for the second visit. A first visit is won by a pretty room. A second is won by a room that worked and a room that worked is the strategy, made physical. It is the brand you can walk into. Strategy you can stand in.

Three principles
Materials over moods
Mood boards age out in a season; materials don't. We start with the surfaces, joinery, and finishes that hold up under traffic, time, and the camera flash of a Tuesday lunch rush. The mood emerges from the materials, not the other way around.
Floorplans are choreography
A space is a sequence: where you enter, what you see first, where your eye lands, where you settle. We draw that sequence before we touch a finish. Half the work is invisible, and that is the half that makes the visible half work.
Light is the last word
Drama is the easy trick, and the one that gets a room photographed once and avoided after. We light for the long evening: a menu you can read, a face you can see, a warmth that flatters without performing. The wrong light empties the most beautiful room.
